2014 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide review

It might be Harley's most popular model, but the FLHX Street Glide also has a few compromises, not to mention a high price

It’s easy to understand why the Street Glide has been Harley Davidson’s top selling motorcycle worldwide in recent years, even if we parsimonious Brits have bought more of the cheaper 883 Sportster models. With its exposed V-twin engine, “bat-wing” handlebar fairing and solid panniers, the Street Glide combines classical Harley style with useful levels of comfort and practicality.
And Harley has not rested on the Street Glide’s success. For 2014 it’s updated as part of a major overhaul of the touring range, code-named Project Rushmore.
The Glide’s essential look is unchanged but the majority of parts are new, including the fairing, which keeps its distinctive shape but incorporates a new duct that channels air behind the low screen, to reduce turbulence. Parts including wheels, instruments, hand controls and luggage are redesigned.
Unlike the giant Electra Glide Ultra Limited, the Street Glide doesn’t use Harley’s new, partially liquid-cooled engine, partly because the lack of fairing lowers means radiators can’t be hidden in similar fashion.
Instead it’s powered by a 1,690cc air-cooled unit that Harley calls its High Output Twin Cam unit, and which uses new camshafts and airbox to produce roughly five per cent more power than the previous model, with the biggest gain at low revs.
